I spent the first 22 years of my life without ever really being able to answer that question. Life is hard. Every moment of pain, suffering, and loss can seem like the end of the world in the moment. Here’s the thing: every family has their shit, their drama, their whatever. What gets tricky is determining what *is* or *isn’t* healthy as you’re growing up. It’s very easy to get sucked into the same toxic patterns that your family has essentially dumped on you. I haven’t talked in detail about what’s gone on in my life/family lately but I will because I know we are not alone. I believe that people’s feelings are valid, but that doesn’t always mean that they are true. If you have to question if someone is abusing you, the answer is very likely to be “yes”. I want you to know that taking a step back to care for the people that have truly cared for you (in any capacity) is essential. Setting boundaries in your relationships is essential, but that’s a very healthy thing. My dad and I *really* haven't been able to hang out or have fun since ‘05-‘07 when I was playing travel softball and volleyball and we listened to classic rock and talked the whole car ride there and back every time… and at Ruby Tuesday’s (which we always got in trouble for). Forces out of my control have led to this place. But, tonight my dad let me make him dinner and we laughed, really laughed… talking, eating, playing catch with Harlyn and watching The Big Lebowski. I cannot tell you the last time that my dad and I got to actually hang out like we did this afternoon/evening, but I look forward to more time with him, even through all of the bad shit and the pain. Love you guys so much.
