Compound vs Isolation exercises
Compound exercises use multiple joints, versus isolation exercises use movement involve a single joint.
An example of this is Bench Press (compound, using shoulders and elbow) vs Pec deck (using shoulders only).
In general, as someone who wants to put on muscle, compound exercises are better because they involve more of your body and helps to prevent imbalances. You can also lift more weights so you are pushing your body to grow more.
Isolation exercises are useful if certain bodyparts are lagging behind, or if the supporting muscles (like triceps in a chest workout) are giving out first.
In general (and there are exceptions, like pre-exhaust), do compound exercises first in a workout, and isolation exercises later.
