Have you ever heard of a float tank? It is also referred to as a sensory deprivation tank. 💦
They are usually designed as pods or rooms with large tubs. The body temperature water is then filled with 500 lbs of pharmaceutical grade epsom salt to help you float. You plug your ears, you close your eyes (or look up into the starry ceiling), and you try to zen out and meditate for an hour. For me, I focused on the sound of my breathing until I was able to focus my listening on just the sound of my heartbeat. 💗
This new-aged practice was popularized by people like Joe Rogan (who I stopped listening to before 2020) and now you can find floating facilities all over the US and most big cities around the world!
I’m sure an hour of uninterrupted silence and rest would relax anyone’s body and mind. And you will certainly have a restful sleep the night you do it. But the float is also meant to provide you with a safe space to explore difficult questions.
For me, this was the perfect place to spend my birthday. My life is constantly changing and evolving, so it is vital for me to take time to reflect on all that I’ve been through. Some heavy emotions came up during my float, but in the end I felt calm and at peace.
Being held up by the sacred element of water reminds me to be more like it.
As Bruce Lee says, “Empty Your Mind. Be Formless, Shapeless like Water. Now you put water into a cup it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be Water, My Friend.”
