As children, many of us were told that daydreaming is an impractical, ‘lazy’ waste of time. Yet the vivid fantasy lives these women learned to develop as children seem to have benefited them later as adults and helped them become more immersed during lovemaking. In a study done by Wendy E. Stock and James H. Geer at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, most of the women who listened to a ten minute erotic tape became sexually excited. But women who reported that they fantasized while masturbating became measurably more excited than those who seldom fantasized. The original research that inspired the book (Scantling, 1990) also found that women who enjoy sexual fantasy – and fantasize frequently – report more intense sexual arousal and sexual enjoyment during both masturbation and sex with a partner.
