I think it really depends on the partner, and the situation...it could be a kind of "read the room" thing.
For example, is your partner a bit shy, inexperienced, or insecure when it comes to sex? Or are they pretty open-minded and sexual already?
I think it always just comes down to having a conversation, without any expectation or pressure.
That could sound like:
"What are your hard limits? What are yes's and what are no's for you?
How do you feel about anal play? Have you ever tried it before?
Would you be open to trying it..."
Then see what they say and have a conversation about it!
Asking "how do you FEEL about xxx" is always a good question - especially if your partner is a woman.
