Another winner this month . This is a found footage film done in documentary style focusing on the whereabouts of a hiker named Gary a socially awkward nature lover who prefers going out into the Nevada desert for days on end to being around people .
One day Gary doesn’t return home . The film is presented as a documentary , interviewing Gary’s family and friends and using old footage from Gary’s you tube videos to tell Gary’s story and attempt to make sense of what happened in the days that Gary went out and just disappeared
The faux documentary style is exceptionally done and it views like most documentaries you’d find on true crime channels . Mixing in footage from Gary’s personal recordings allows us to get to know him and get inside his head just a bit . As the film progresses we get some answers as to where Gary went, what compelled him to do so , and the reasoning hits hard for anyone who ever read the comments sections of popular you tube videos .
The film gives few definitive answers but enough hints as to what happened for the viewer to form their own conclusions and that’s part of the fun , especially when we’re able to view the last things Gary filmed before he went missing .

ENTRANCE
Then best type of horror movies for me are the ones that stick in your head long after the credits roll because you just went on a journey for a few hours with a character or characters and by the end of the story you feel like the wind was knocked out of you .
Entrance works for its ending , an ending the builds very slowly and methodically . The viewer is rewarded for their patience and attention as the first hour is the definition of slow burn . You follow Suzie throughout her quite ordinary day doing her ordinary job and her ordinary friends making ordinary decisions until there are the tiniest and briefest moments where something just isn’t quite right . Is that person on the street keeping pace coincidentally or is she being followed ? And so forth and so on
The horror in this movie isn’t a possessed kid or a maniac in the woods with a hockey mask or alien invasion . It happens without warning , without bells and whistles , and without reason but it’s very very real and the viewer is rewarded for following Suzie with a final 20-25 minute sequence that is as impressive from a film standpoint as it is story wise

SAW X
If you’re new to my page , let me just say Drew loves this time of year even more than I do . He loves horror movies and we’ve been doing this Halloween horror challenge for about a decade now . The goal is to watch 31 horror movies in 31 days . Sometimes horror is a loose definition. Casper counts as a ghostly Halloween movie but isn’t scary. Seven is quite scary but is considered a drama or thriller . As long as it fits the theme in some way it counts . And the goal is always to make most of the viewings movies we’ve never watched before so having done this for so long , a fair number of these are going to be pretty obscure
On with the show . Saw X takes place between parts 1 and 2 and sheds a lot of light onto the life of John ‘Jigsaw’ Kramer and for the first time he really is the focal point of this movie . Yes , there are traps and gore and all manner of horrific things occurring but we get a lot of time with John the man and this movie tries to humanize him more than any other .
Saw has always been very intriguing because it really is a lot more than the gory traps. There is a deeper story within the story that you only start to understand and appreciate as you work your way through the series . Minor characters in one movie become major players in another . Backgrounds and locations are revisited and there are multiple layers to the characters and most people are not who they seem at first
The latest film delivers all the things you expect from a Saw movie but with a lot more of a personal look at the character who’s been the face of the franchise for so long
