I’ve gone through different periods of climbing more and climbing less, but I’ve climbed since I was in single digits. These days I’m inside way more than outside, but only because my life is full and I don’t get to go to my favorite mountains as much as I’d like. 🙃
Most days I’m on top rope, but I do boulder a fair bit too. Sport climbing is my favorite, but I don’t always lead when I’m working on maintaining fitness in the gym.
Running laps on a roof engages the whole body and is a fun technique to learn. I can remember when I first figured out how to “bicycle” with my feet. Bicycling involves pushing with one toe while pulling with the topside of the opposing foot. It helps lock the lower body in place while you advance a hand. Being an upper level climber is a lot like any sport … it takes a lot of practice, appropriate gear, and the mastering of correct techniques.
When I am climbing is about the only time my mind is completely quiet. I do enjoy listening to my favorite music on the wall, but for just a bit while I am making those moves the rest of life briefly disappears from around me. 💜
