Being away from home
As you may have noticed, I have been away from home for the last few weeks. So what should you do to your fitness routine when you are away for work or holiday or some other reasons?
(1) Decide if you should take a week from workouts
Not working out for a week or so can be a very good thing, especially when you've been consistently exercising throughout the year. It gives your body a chance to relax, repair and recharge, and it is something that should be built to be any fitness programmes
(2) Research facilities available
Will you have access to a gym? What equipment may it have? Do some research and it will help you to decide whether you should just take a week off, or what exercises you may want to find alternatives for
(3) Adapt
Be flexible, if the equipment is not there, can you use something else / do something else? If there are new/different equipment, try them out! Build up your bodyweight exercise repertoire too
(4) Focus on what's important
Fitness may be important, but if you are on holiday with your family, surely spending time with them should be the priority? Involve other people in your routine and have fun. Sometimes working out is not the right thing to do.

Machines vs free weights
A lot of people will tell you that free weights are better, but are they better for you?
If you're new to the gym or lifting weights, it may be difficult to figure out where to start, and how to do exercises effectively. Machines are an excellent way to start your fitness journey because they guide your movements and often have instructions and suggestions on them to help you do the exercises.
The presence of a machine also helps to remind you not to skip a body part - no chest day everyday!
Once you're more comfortable and start to learn how to do exercises, however, free weights should take over because they force you to think about balance, allow for personal variations (which a machine can only do some much) and have infinite variations.
Make sure you learn how to do a particular free weight exercise properly - YouTube is great for this, but the key thing is to think about (1) what muscles are you working, (2) what is the movement and (3) is the movement working those muscles?
You will be surprised to hear that very often people do the exercise wrong because they do not think about these three things.
