October Scary Movie Features #12 AS ABOVE SO BELOW An interesting premise with some amazing execution and cinematography that provides a feeling of claustrophobia but falls apart in the end Such promise . Heard a lot about this one so finally got around to watching it . An archeologist believes that a mysterious artifact is hidden deep in the catacombs beneath Paris so her and her team venture down below in search of it . You hear stories of these people getting stuck in caves unable to be rescued and the camera serves as a POV for the audience as the characters move in and around these underground caverns running into dead ends, incredibly tight spaces as well as traps . They also stumble across some other groups inside the caves that were some of the creepiest moments of the movie There was a lot of potential and for the first hour or so it’s completely gripping but the resolution just seems to happen so quickly and without much consequence I wasn’t even sure the movie was actually over . It wasn’t horrible or even bad , just didn’t live up to the hype or potential

October Scary Movie Features #11 HUNTER HUNTER 31 Movies in 31 days of October #11 HUNTER HUNTER I think this one is going to end up near the top of the list by the time the month is over The film focuses and a couple and their daughter who’ve been living in a cabin in the wilderness for years . The husband has no interest in the outside world. He has what he needs from nature - food shelter and his family . His daughter has never really known the world outside the woods and his wife remembers and wants to return to a life where there are other people and indoor plumbing and grocery stores . It’s getting colder and food is becoming sparse . If that’s not bad enough it seems a wolf that had been stalking the family has seemingly returned which puts all their lives in danger . The wife pleads with her husband to tell the park services but he warns her that if they bring their problems to outsiders they’ll inherit new problems of their own . He doesn’t trust anyone and their marriage is starting to strain because of the lack of food, the isolation and the possible danger in the predator’s return When the husband goes out in search of the wolf to try and protect his family , what he finds is something more horrific than he could possibly imagine . The film does a great job of making you care about this family even with their differing opinions you know they truly care for one another and want to make this work . Once the main plot is established we’re thrown one curveball that flips things on its head a bit and just when you think this is going to be darker than you thought it goes wayyyy past that darkness and I think everyone who watched this was just sitting in silence for a bit once the credits rolled Very much worth a watch

October Scary Movie Features #10- THE SADNESS And I thought BASKIN was over the top in my review yesterday . This makes that look like family fare. SADNESS is a Taiwanese body horror film where all involved seem to be on a mission to outdo anything that’s come before or will come after Imagine if you will, a zombie movie . But these zombies retain their memories , their abilities, the ability to communicate and worse, the virus acts like rabies . These aren’t shuffling moaning undead monsters . These are humans that have been corrupted into very very very angry monsters with a virus that compels them to act out on their most inhumane instincts . They’re assholes basically but ones who want to cause as much suffering as possible and maybe infect you at the same time The movie wastes no time getting into the action and doesn’t really stop until the credits roll. If you like your horror movies filled with gore and violence and a lot of malevolence it’s going to be really hard to top this one . Be forewarned there’s a higher than average chance something in this film will offend you as it breaks most of the unwritten rules but if you’re looking for something over the top to one up your horror loving friends .. you win with this one

October Scary Movie Features #9- BASKIN Beware - this one is for the die hard horror fans . We’ve been doing the October movie thing for 8 years . That’s a lot of movies and since we try not to repeat more than one or two a year at most and prefer not to watch trash it sometimes takes going online and talking to other horror fans on forums to find out of the box choices like this Turkish horror film if you can’t handle seeing someone dressed as a goat being SA then you won’t be ready for anything else in this movie The movie follows a group of cops who are sitting around a restaurant being jerks and telling stories about some of their most depraved conquests while at the same time treating the staff like crap . They get an emergency distress call telling them to go to a location that they have heard of but know that nothing good comes from the town that is reporting it . They reluctantly answer the call and arrive at a seemingly abandoned building that turns out to be far from abandoned and their nightmares begin Violent, gore filled, insane , mildly offensive but also shot amazingly well. The quality of the acting , the story and the set pieces just add to the complete shock at what occurs later on and while most of the characters we follow don’t seem particularly nice, their fates are more along the lines of ‘wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy ‘ sort of thing . This one is exceptional but not for a casual fan

October Scary Movie Features #8- IDENTITY With an all star cast and a great director in James Mangold this thriller features a group of people stranded in a motel during one of the worst rain storms in years . With roads flooded and phones not working , motorists need pto take refuge in the hotel . But there is a murderer among them One by one , the strangers are attacked . Is the murderer the cop who’s behaving odd, the prisoner he’s transporting , the spooky clerk , the woman on the run or someone else ? The movie does a pretty good job of giving each of these people a moment to stand out and cause just enough doubt in the viewer’s mind that they could be a possible suspect . And what do these murders have to do with the last minute death row appeal occurring at the same time hundreds of miles away ? It’s an effective thriller with the only downside being that by the end of the film one can make an educated guess as to what the twist will be

October Scary Movie Features #7 This Amazon original from Blumhouse starts with the premise of what if you mixed a slasher movie with Back to the Future The Sweet 16 Killer , named that because he stabbed each victim 16 times , hasn’t been heard of since 1987 but when a new murder occurs, the victim’s daughter uses a Time Machine to go back to 1987 to uncover the truth behind the murders, stop the killer and save her mothers life as a result The horror turns to comedy as we see her interact with characters back in their high school days and there are plenty of laughs that come from both the younger version of the adults we met earlier and the ineptitude of the police and the woman out of time story being told . While there are laughs there are still plenty of chills with the murders and failed attempts to stop them . There are even a few moments spent trying to establish the rules and consequences for time travel . The cast is all likeable, the script is fun and the premise is the breath of fresh air in its uniqueness . Definitely one of the more entertaining selections this month and you can catch it now on Amazon

October Scary Movie Features #6 THE CHANGLING 31 Movies in 31 Days of October #6- THE CHANGELING Surprisingly there are some classic horror movies I’ve never seen before and this is one of them George C Scott stars as John Russell a composer who moves across the county into an long vacant mansion maintained by a historical society following the deaths of his family . It doesn’t take long for strange things to occur in the big house . Running water and strange sounds are explained away by old pipes but as things get more and more odd he calls upon experts to hold a seance in the home where he discovers, after playing back the audio recordings , that someone was murdered nearly 80 years ago . Scott’s acting is impeccable and he does a great job portraying a logical man looking for a logical reason behind the ghostly happens in the old home . The movie doesn’t rely on gore or jump scares, the dread builds slowly for the viewer as the character investigates the mystery and gets deeper and deeper involved and there are some genuinely creepy moments throughout the film It’s not the scariest film but there are some great moments of dread and the acting is terrific and for a haunted house movie it’s particularly good.

After getting a book on dark magic signed by one of her favorite authors , he warns her not to mess with this sort of thing but is she going to listen ? Well that wouldn’t be much of a movie After a horrible fight with her mother , the girl, now an emotional mess wishes death on her mom and performs an occult ritual in the woods things start to get a little crazy and she is now dealing with forces out of her control and needs to try and reverse the spell and save her mother before it’s too late

October Scary Movie Features #4- THE KILL LIST A contract killer for hire is trying to adjust to his domestic life back home after a botched assignment months earlier left him hurt physically and emotionally . Now retired , he’s left that life behind him but finds that he can’t adjust to being a normal husband and father and friend and there is an anger burning inside him that can’t be satiated Facing financial hardship , He and his old partner agree to take on a new assignment that pays very well. And once the film gets to his ‘work’ we’re introduced to a world of violence and malevolence that hit extremely hard and definitely doesn’t shy away from the gore . The targets on his list aren’t the usual you see in these types of movies - a priest , a librarian , a politician but there is a purpose for each and as we barrel towards the ending the movie flips the switch a bit in one of the most frightening scenes of real world extremism that I couldn’t believe it . The tonal shifts throughout help establish the final gut punch moments where you look back and think how amazingly terrifying the movie is but one you want be rushing to ever rewatch .
